At her former institution (UTK), Dr. Zepernick created a new graduate-level course "MICR 669: Advanced Techniques in Field Microbiology". While these students were out sampling a local quarry in Knoxville, TN - they stumbled upon a toxigenic harmful algal bloom. Their findings landed them in national, university & local news. In April of 2025 - Dr. Zepernick's recent research article was awarded the 2025 International Society of Microbial Ecology Journal "Best Paper of the Year Award". Spotlight in Society of Limnology Wetzel Audio Textbook

Robert G. Wetzel's textbook is the foundational basis for limnology - the study of freshwaters. Today, the International Society of Limnology is  modernizing this classic textbook into digital textbook chapters for the next generation.
